Byron’s World's Greatest Shave ( and Growth ... and Bleach ... and Colour)

This blog was only meant to show my cooking wins and fails, but I wanted to share my story of a cause that I have taken up since Covid-19 started.

As many of my friends already know, every few years I either do World's Greatest Shave or Movember. I had been planning to do Worlds Greatest Shave next year, but with the daughter (Sophie) of close friends (The Wigman’s) getting Leukaemia this year, Mum getting breast cancer, and Covid-19 causing us to be in lock down; I figured it would be an ideal time to grow my hair and beard then have a big shave at the end.

This was to be the longest I had ever grown my beard and the longest I’ve grown my hair since my early 20s.

Just after Easter (13th April) I decided to start this journey. At this time the official Worlds Greatest Shave day had actually just past, and I was due for my next haircut (I have one about every 3 months).  The plan was to grow my hair until either Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in Victoria, Australia; or until 30th June, which ever was sooner.

6th Feb - Clean shaven,
about a month after my last hair cut.
13th April
A little over few week after Vic restrictions started and 1 week after my last shave
Also the day I decided I would do Worlds Greatest Shave.

I had set myself a fundraising goal of $1,000, but based on previous fund raising attempts, I was expecting about $500-600 dollar and I would have been happy.

Within 2 weeks of announcing my intentions to shave I was already at $500 and it was growing quickly.  It was at this point I increased my challenge to also dye my hair for each $1000 raised.

May 20th rocked around and I had reached $1002.75, plus I had a couple of hundred in pledges on top of this.  So it looked like the first goal to colour my hair had been reach.  After a quick poll, as my 6 month old Daughters names is Violet, purple was the chosen colour.  This would be the final colour to be dyed if we reached other goals.

By the 25th of May, the Victoria Government had announced that stage 2 of "lock-down ending" was going to happen on June 1.  Yah!!! I was so over the beard by this stage and looking forward to bringing the shave forward.  I was also over the $1,000 mark so first I had to colour my hair.

As I really wanted to make the Purple pop, I made a deal. If we got to $1,500 by that weekend I would add in a second colour (Blond) early.

25th May

Come the Saturday 30th May 3:30, I was at just over $1,400 with still around $400 in pledges. I couldn't believe just how generous everyone was.  So I was sitting in The Mane Man Beauty Salon in Port Melbourne, awaiting to become a blond ...

30th May

Its now the night of the 6th June as I write this, I can already see my roots growing back, but i'm still incredibly blond and every time I look in the mirror I still can't get use to it.  Tomorrow, all going to plan I will be dyeing my hair purple !

To date donations now total $1,749.93 and I still have about $300 in pledges to come in, meaning we are over the $2,000 mark !!!

Massive thank you to everyone that has donated to this wonderful cause.

Every day another 35 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer. That's one Aussie every 41 minutes. Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours.
